Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has introduced new regulations impacting international students who seek to work in Canada after graduation.

Language Proficiency 

along with program restrictions, students applying for study permits on or after November 1 must meet minimum language proficiency standards in French or English.

Beginning November 1, updated criteria for the PGWP will apply, focusing on programs that meet Canada’s labor market demands. Only graduates from designated programs in priority fields will now qualify for a work permit.

Rules for New & Future Students 

The updated criteria affect only students who apply for a study permit on or after November 1, 2024. Those who applied before this date are subject to previous requirements, though they must still meet the updated language standards.
