Lawyer Services and Payments is responsible for efficient and accurate payment of certificate accounts in accordance with the Legal Aid Services Act and, the Legal Aid Service Rules and Schedules (the tariff).

Leading Responsibilities

  1. Determine entitlement to and amount of discretionary increases for payment of fees in excess of tariff maximums
  2. Assess requests for disbursement funding for experts, transcripts and other third party expenses
  3. Review examined and/or settled accounts for adherence to LAO policies and standards and justify decisions made in response to lawyers’ inquiries regarding their accounts
  4. Maintain knowledge of criminal law, family law, immigration and refugee law, the Legal Aid Service Rules, and other related LAO policies and procedures
  5. Prepare recommendations with regard to the settlement of accounts over $20,000.00
  6. Act as a resource to Mid-Level Case Managers on tariff and billing issues
  7. Supporting Directors General and panel officers with panel management including identification of billing problems, correcting behaviour and supporting the panel removal process
  8. Providing training and billing support to service providers and other LAO departments
  9. Assessing and responding to client complaints regarding payment of lawyers’ accounts
  10. Managing costs and recoveries with the assistance of the Client Account Services department.
  11. Participate on project working groups for corporate and LSP initiatives related to fees and disbursements.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

Expertise or Requirements

1. D or LL.B degree from a Canadian law school.
2. Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
3. 3+ years of experience as a lawyer.
4. Strong knowledge of Canadian law, particularly in [insert area of law].
5. Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team..

  2. A commitment to social justice or public interest work.
  3. A sound knowledge of Legal Aid Ontario’s operations and mandate.
This position is represented by The Society of United Professionals and the employee will be governed by the provisions of the collective agreement and union dues will be deducted bi-weekly from date of hire.
